Kanunga Waterfall

Kanunga, Kenya
A short but slippery hike from the road through farmland and forest to a powerful waterfall that throws mist twenty metres into the air. Not the tallest falls in Kenya, but the setting makes up for what it lacks in height. Moss-covered rocks frame the cascade. The forest canopy closes in overhead, filtering the light into green-gold beams. And the sound — the kind of deep, constant roar that drowns out everything else in your head. The path down is not signposted and can be muddy after rain. Wear shoes with proper grip and be prepared to use your hands on the steeper sections. A local guide from the nearby village is worth the small fee — they know the best angles and the safest route. Best after the long rains when the flow is at its strongest and the mist becomes a cloud you walk through.
