Ndege
A digital sanctuary for Kenya’s extraordinary birdlife.
Ndege ~ Swahili for “bird” ~ brings field sightings, species discovery, bird calls, and community knowledge into one thoughtfully designed birding portal. Built around the realities of exploring Kenya’s wild places, it pairs an editorial species archive with location-aware observations, practical field tools, and an offline-first experience for places where the network disappears.
The Challenge
Birders often piece together a trip from sightings platforms, audio archives, field guides, and local chat groups. That makes it hard to follow what is being seen nearby, learn the context behind a species, or keep useful references close at hand in remote habitats. Many global guides also leave out indigenous names, cultural knowledge, and the local guides who make these places meaningful.
One Field Companion
Live Sightings & Hotspots
A Kenya-focused sightings feed brings recent observations and hotspot discovery together, with species, observer, place, and time details. Explore birding areas from Karura Forest and Nairobi National Park to Kakamega, the Rift Valley lakes, and Arabuko-Sokoke.
Find a Bird in the Field
Narrow down possibilities by size, plumage, and habitat, or use the photo and sound-match concept to help identify an unfamiliar visitor. Designed to make a quick field observation easier to turn into a confident next step.
Species with a Sense of Place
Browse a richly illustrated archive with scientific and local names, range, habitat, behavior, and conservation context. The Lilac-breasted Roller ~ Coracias caudatus, known locally as Kambu anchors the collection.
Listen, Learn, Recognize
Bird-call recordings connect sound to species and field notes, helping birders learn the difference between a territorial call, flock whistle, alarm chatter, and courtship duet.
Plan for the Seasons
A year-round migration and breeding calendar makes seasonal movement easier to understand, from Palearctic arrivals along the Rift Valley flyway to local breeding plumage cycles.
Go Further Together
Discover community-led bird walks, local eco-guides, and conservation partners. Clear giving information shows how support can reach rangers, community guides, and field research.

Field Planner
Designed for Kenya’s Field Conditions
Offline-First by Design
Prepare a field pack before setting out, with a compact selection of species references, illustrations, and audio available without a connection. Sightings and notes can fit naturally into an intermittent-connectivity workflow.
Local Knowledge Belongs Here
Scientific taxonomy sits alongside Swahili and other local names, cultural stories, and community expertise, making the archive richer and more useful than a species list alone.
Transparent Stewardship
Conservation support is presented with clear, auditable allocation goals for ranger work, local guide livelihoods, and research infrastructure, alongside recognition of partners such as Nature Kenya and Ol Pejeta.
