Wasini Island
Wasini, Kenya
The day trip that made the whole Diani trip worthwhile. You book at Shimoni pier early morning, board a dhow, and head out to find dolphins. And you find them — pods of bottlenose dolphins that swim alongside the boat close enough to touch.
Then snorkelling over the reef, which is alive with colour and fish. Then the boat takes you to Wasini Island itself, where the local women's cooperative has prepared a seafood feast. Crab, fish, octopus, rice, coconut beans — spread out on a long table in a shaded garden. You eat with your hands and everything tastes like the ocean.
After lunch, the tide drops and reveals a sandbar in the middle of the channel. You wade out to what is essentially a temporary island made of white sand surrounded by turquoise water. Swim, float, watch the dhows pass.
It sounds like a tourist trap but it's community-run and feels completely authentic. KES 4,500 all-inclusive. Go early. Bring reef-safe sunscreen.
