Shela Beach

Lamu, Kenya
Twelve kilometres of sand and almost nobody on it. Walk from Lamu Old Town along the waterfront to Shela village — forty-five minutes through narrow streets and past dhow builders — then keep going. The beach stretches south into dunes that look like they belong in the Sahara. Massive, rolling, wind-sculpted sand dunes that rise from the coastline and make you feel very, very small. No sun loungers. No hawkers selling bracelets. No beach bars playing music you didn't ask for. Just sand, sea, and the occasional fisherman pulling a net. The silence is the kind that city people pay therapists to help them find. Bring water and a hat because there's no shade for kilometres. The sun is relentless. But the emptiness is the reward — a stretch of coastline that feels like it belongs to you alone, even if only for the morning.
