The Escarpment Viewpoint
Rift Valley, Kenya
The signed viewpoint on the Nairobi-Naivasha road where the Great Rift Valley suddenly opens below you like someone pulled back a curtain on one of the planet's most dramatic landscapes.
It's a 600-metre drop. On clear days you can see Lake Naivasha shimmering in the valley floor, the cone of Mount Longonot rising to the south, and the far western wall of the rift dissolving into blue haze. The scale is almost impossible to process.
I've stopped here dozens of times — on the way to Naivasha, on the way back, on random Sunday drives — and it never gets old. The valley changes with the weather and the light. Sunrise paints it gold. Late afternoon turns it deep purple. Overcast days make it moody and vast.
Free, easily accessible, and one of the most stunning viewpoints in East Africa. No excuse not to stop.
