Forodhani Night Market
Stone Town, Zanzibar
Every evening as the sun sets, the Forodhani waterfront transforms. Smoke rising from dozens of charcoal grills, vendors calling out, the smell of spices and grilled seafood hanging in the salt air. It's theatre and dinner in one.
Walk the entire row first. Resist buying from the first stall. See everything, then commit. The Zanzibar pizza is the star — a thin dough parcel stuffed with egg, minced meat, vegetables, and sometimes cheese, folded and cooked on a flat griddle. Crispy outside, molten inside.
The mishkaki (grilled meat skewers) are smoky and tender. The sugar cane juice is pressed to order and comes ice-cold. The octopus is charred and served on a paper plate with lime.
Everything is fresh, everything is cheap, and the Indian Ocean is right there — waves lapping at the seawall while you eat. This is what food is supposed to feel like.
