Diani Beach
Diani, Kenya
White sand that squeaks underfoot. Water so turquoise it looks edited. A coastline that stretches for kilometres without getting crowded.
The morning is best. Low tide exposes tidal pools — little rock pools filled with sea urchins, starfish, and tiny fish darting between anemones. The light is soft and golden and the beach is almost empty. Just you, the occasional jogger, and fishermen pulling in their morning catch.
Afternoon brings the kite surfers — bright kites arcing against the blue sky. The beach bars fill up. Music starts drifting down from the hotels. The energy shifts from peaceful to lively without ever becoming hectic.
Walk south from Boxo for the emptier stretches where the sand is uninterrupted and the only footprints are yours. Bring reef shoes if you want to wade out — there's coral in places. And stay for sunset. Always stay for sunset.
