Bush Gardens
Lamu, Kenya
Hidden in the backstreets of Lamu Old Town, through a doorway you'd walk past without a second glance. But step through and you're in a courtyard garden under bougainvillea, with tables set between potted plants and the low murmur of other diners who figured out the secret.
The prawn curry is legendary among Lamu regulars. Rich, coconut-heavy, with a slow chilli burn that builds across the meal. The fish is grilled whole over charcoal and served with chapati and coconut beans — the kind of meal that makes you wonder why restaurants anywhere else bother with complication.
Nothing on the menu costs much. The portions are generous. The passion fruit juice is fresh-pressed and comes in a tall glass with ice.
Get there early for lunch, grab a garden table, and settle in. This is Lamu eating at its best — slow, flavourful, and completely without pretension.
